Jeff Barr, an early AWS employee, credits Vermeulen, Jassy, Bezos, himself, and a few others for coming up with the idea of what would evolve into EC2, S3, and RDS, whilst Jassy recalls that being a result of brainstorming for about a week with "ten of the best technology minds and ten of the best product management minds" on about ten different Internet applications and the most primitive building blocks required to build them. By fall 2003, databases, storage, and compute were identified as the first set of infrastructure pieces that Amazon should launch.

Jassy subsequently laid down the vision for an "Internet OS" made up of foundational infrastructure primitives that alleviated key impediments to shipping software applications faster. This unexpected developer interest took Amazon by surprise and convinced them that developers were "hungry for more." īy the Summer of 2003, Andy Jassy had taken over Bryar's portfolio at Rick Dalzell's behest, after Vermeulen, who was Bezos' first pick, declined the offer. Over a hundred applications were built on top of it by 2004. In July 2002, Web Services, managed by Colin Bryar, launched its first web services opening up the platform to all developers. The genesis of AWS came in the early 2000s. Įarly AWS "building blocks" logo along a sigmoid curve depicting recession followed by growth. AWS operates from many global geographical regions including 6 in North America. As part of the subscription agreement, Amazon provides security for subscribers' systems. Subscribers can pay for a single virtual AWS computer, a dedicated physical computer, or clusters of either. Fees are based on a combination of usage (known as a "Pay-as-you-go" model), hardware, operating system, software, or networking features chosen by the subscriber required availability, redundancy, security, and service options.

The AWS technology is implemented at server farms throughout the world, and maintained by the Amazon subsidiary. AWS's virtual computers emulate most of the attributes of a real computer, including hardware central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) for processing local/ RAM memory hard-disk/ SSD storage a choice of operating systems networking and pre-loaded application software such as web servers, databases, and customer relationship management (CRM). One of these services is Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which allows users to have at their disposal a virtual cluster of computers, available all the time, through the Internet. These cloud computing web services provide a variety of basic abstract technical infrastructure and distributed computing building blocks and tools. ( AWS) is a subsidiary of Amazon providing on-demand cloud computing platforms and APIs to individuals, companies, and governments, on a metered pay-as-you-go basis.
